Saint Columba URC Liverpool is proud to be part of the Vision4Life process which the United Reformed Church is following for 3 years from Advent 2008 through to Advent 2011. It will be three years of focus on re-engaging with the Bible, Prayer and Evangelism with the purpose of bringing transformation to the URC and its partner churches.

Here at Saint Columba URC Liverpool under our minister Alan's guidance we have completed the first year in our spiritual journey as we explored the Bible Year and were challenged to think of the Bible in new and exciting ways. It has been a humbling and exciting journey so far and we encourage anybody to come along to our worship and organized meetings for Vision4Life and challenge yourself to see what direction you are taken.

We have just started the Year of Prayer which runs from Advent 2009 to December 2010 when the Evangelism Year begins.

Ways into prayer

As we go through our life we all learn different things in different ways. Sometimes we learn by watching someone else. Sometimes we listen to a talk on a subject and take notes. Sometimes we look for new information on our own - in books or on the internet.

How do we learn about prayer? Reading books about it is not everything and even if we find good teachers we can't just copy what other people do and expect prayer to come alive for us. That's because prayer is not a skill we learn, or an idea we understand , but a relationship we grow into.

In prayer we try to draw closer to God, and learn how to let God come closer to us. Praying in this way is about recognising how God is with us all the way on our life's journey. It's also about tuning in to the ways in which God communicates with us and listening for God's guidance.

Many of us worry that we don't do this well and never 'get it right'. That's quite natural, because we human beings do things imperfectly, no matter how hard we try. Thankfully, God is expert at dealing with our mistakes and encouraging us to try again. Let's use this time to try new ways of growing in relationship with God through prayer.

So why not challenge yourself today and examine your relationship with God, and if you would like to explore this relationship a little deeper then please let us welcome you with open arms into the fellowship of Saint Columba.

It only takes one step to cross the door into the church and for some people that's the hardest challenge they face. Take that first fulfilling step this week and see where God leads us as we enjoy the journey together.
